Double direction thrust ball bearings can support axial load in both directions. Noncontact, stainless steel shields help to reduce contamination. When large thrust loads in one direction are coupled with radial loads, angular contact ball bearings, Figure 2, are usually superior. Most high-speed and precision spindles use axially preloaded pairs of these bearings. Preload is controlled by the length of the spacers, which determine axial location of the races, or by mounting the bearings against one another in a “back-to-back” or “face-to-face” fashion.
Also, as time goes on, the grease may begin to dry out which allows for a very noisy fan, but it will continue to run for a long time. This brings up an interesting point, the reason for the use of ball bearing fans is to extend the fan life past sleeve bearings. However, if usable life were defined to end when the fan became noisy it is quite possible the sleeve bearing fan would out live the ball bearing one. Precision bearings used in applications where the load is purely axial. Until recently, Rolex has used bushing style rotors on their watches. Steel – Historically, most yo-yo ball bearings have been made from steel. Some are stainless, but since stainless steel is much softer than ordinary steel, this reduces the life time of the bearing. That’s why many manufacturers (such asBuzz-On Industries) use non-stainless bearings. The R4-2RS and R4-ZZ is a 1/4 ball bearing that is found in many applications. The R4-2RS ball bearing has two contact rubber seals one on each side of the ball bearing. The R4-ZZ ball bearing has two non-contact metal shields one on each side of the ball bearing. If your application requires a R4 ball bearing with only one seal or shield you can get this ball bearing and take one of the shields or seals off. This 1/4 inch ball bearing is high quality and can take electric motor demands if needed. Mast Guide bearings are used for high radial and occaisonal thrust loads. They typically have a thick cross section on the outer race which performs as a wheel or tire.
